Don’t entrust your memories to just one company

Around Father’s Day, this advert from Chrome seemed to pop up everywhere, exorting new dads to set up memory Google accounts for their little one(s):

Even as the water slowly drained from my eyes (I was cutting onions at the time, y’see), I was pondering on the wisdom of trusting one company to ensure that they wouldn’t arbitarily delete things over the next 20 years. And before you think that dotcom companies wouldn’t do that – AOL for one did just that.

And it seems that what Google gives with one hand, it takes from the other. It’s shutting down Google accounts of people under 18, once it realises that people are under 18. Which directly contradicts what its’ marketeers WANT you to do.

So if you have set up a dear.baby@gmail.com, I really hope you have backups.
